The Catcher in the Rye ¬¬- “I Am a Rock” Anyone who has read The Catcher in the Rye by J.D. Salinger and “I Am a Rock” by Paul Simon knows that there are many similarities in the two works speakers but also know that there are many differences. In The Catcher in the Rye, Holden shares many similaries with the speaker from “I Am a Rock”. The two speakers also have many differences. Both share similar qualities and ideas but at the same time have different views and perspectives. Holden from The Catcher in the Rye shares many qualities with the speaker from “I Am a Rock”. Both share the quality of isolating themselves. Holden has been looked past his entire life, starting from when he was kid his parents were never their for him. They sent Holden to boarding school for most of his life and he has never been able to fall back on his parents so he now isloates himself. In The Catcher in the Rye Holden tries to make friends but always asks to personnal of questions. When Holden meets up with his old friend in the bar he asks about his love and sex life and that instantly pushed his old friend away. In “I Am a Rock” the speaker has completely given up on any form of friendship or partnership. The speaker has built emotional barraries to avoid ever getting hurt again because of relationships. He does this to never let anyone close to him to where he might grow a connection. Another difference is that in the end of The Catcher in the Rye Holden realizes what has went wrong in his life. He realizes that in order to move forward in life you cant be afraid of falling of the horse you have to reach for the golden ring. Even at the end of the poem “I Am a Rock” the speaker shows no remorse. He continues to shelter himself and hide from
