Both Voltaire and Moliere were influential thinkers of the Enlightenment. Both of these gentlemen proved to be excellent writers judging by the representation of their works, Moliere’s Tartuffe and Voltaire’s Candide literature showed examples of inclusive significance towards the Enlightenment period. Both of these philosophers also showed the sense of intellectual thinking and displayed different forms of social criticism during their time.

As portrayed in the play, Moliere advocates for the belief in religious moderation and criticizes conduct and religious hypocrisy.
Another idea was ignorance. Tartuffe shows this specific characteristic through one of the characters, Dorine. Dorine is the lady-maid to Mariane, Organs daughter. Because Dorine is someone with a low social standing, she is seen as ignorant because she is part of the low working class. However, she is much smarter and a lot more reasonable than Orgon.
Voltaire was a realist. Though he was not the greatest optimist, he was by far a pessimist. Voltaire recommended free thinking along with scientific reasoning. An example of Enlightenment that Voltaire refers to be that whatever happens may not always be for the best in many situations.
