The world has changed drastically over thousands of years. Every religion to a degree has some of the same fundamental similarities. There are many religious figures that influenced religion, philosophy and the society itself as we know it today. Three religious figures that hugely influenced us are Jesus, Buddha and Confucius. For the purposes of this paper, I will discuss the similarities and differences between these three concerning birth, how they were perceived at the time, and death. Each of these three we can trace something in our philosophy or society that originated from them. Birth is something that we all take for granted to be the same for everybody. His influence continued thousands of years after His death. Example of His influence is that “Historians record that prior to Jesus, the ancient world left little trace of any organized charitable effort.”() An Angel named Gabriel was sent to Nazareth to a virgin named Mary who was engaged to a man named Joseph. The angel greeted her and told her that “You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus. He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David”. () In those days, a woman who was pregnant before marriage would result in scandal and stoning for being unfaithful. An angel also appeared to Joseph in a dream saying that the baby was caused through the Holy Spirit and to name him Jesus because he would save the people from their sins. Mary and her husband-to-be Joseph traveled to city of Bethlehem to register for a census ordered by Caesar. During their time in Bethlehem, Jesus was born in a manger because there was no room for them in an inn. An angel appeared to shepherds near Bethlehem and gave them the news that the Messiah had been born. Three wise men followed the star until it as directly above where Jesus was born. His birth has a lot of mystery surrounded around it. For example his philosophies are very popular. From influence from his teachings, “The Chinese have been culturally conditioned to suppress own personal needs and think in terms of collective responsibility—first, to their families, then community, clan, and nation at large.” () His father was 70 years old widowed with nine daughters and wanting a son of his own. His second wife Yen Ching-tsai traveled to Ni-ch’iu Mountain where she dreamed that a spirit told her “You shall have a son, who will be a great sage and prophet, and you must bring forth in hollow mulberry tree.” While pregnant, she dreamed that five old men came up to her, leading behind them a K’e-lin, a Chinese unicorn, that carried a green jade tablet that prophesied that he would be a “throneless king”. () The five old men are almost equivalent to the three wise men for Jesus. After tying a silk scarf around the unicorn’s horn, it disappeared. The night Confucius was born, two dragons appeared in the sky to keep watch and two women poured out fragrant drafts while Ching-tsai was giving birth. () This is another thing that was in common with birth of Jesus. There were fragrances gifted to Mary and there were angels over the manager for Jesus. Within the cave Confucius was being born in, Heaven sent down harmonious sounds for the birth of the son. Spring of water bubbled
