Beowulf Battle Comparison
There are many differences and similarities in the battles of Beowulf. He prepared for each battle differently.Each battle called for different strategies and levels of preparedness for Beowulf, both mentally and physically. While the outcome of the battles were similar each tested Beowulf’s strength and honor. In the first battle of the book, we find Beowulf battling the monster Grendel. Beowulf hears that the Danes are being troubled by Grendel, so as a warrior in his prime, he travels from Geatland to help them. Grendel has been attacking the king of Dane’s mead hall because they woke him while celebrating.Every day for years before Beowulf’s arrival Grendel would come and kill Danes during celebrations, but their cries were answered when Beowulf came to their rescue.When Grendel attacks the mead hall expecting easy prey, but is instead met by his biggest challenge yet, Beowulf. Beowulf realizing that Grendel fights with no weapons decided to fight him unarmed.By doing this, he proves that he is a true warrior and will not fight with an unfair advantage. This shows his honor and confidence, which brings joy and confidence to the Danes.Grendel and Beowulf battle, Grendel, defeated, goes to retreat but is interrupted as Beowulf rips his arm clear off.The Danes erupt with cheer as the Beowulf raised the arm of the once great Grendel.Grendel then retreats back to his swamp.After Rothgar, King of the Danes congratulates Beowulf on his victory…
