In society today, the definition of hero is different than it was 100 years ago, and even the definition in today's superhero movies is different than what someone might consider a hero in today’s society. Everyone has their own definition of their “hero”, mine is someone who is willing to do what others won’t, brave, courageous, and selfishness. It takes a certain kind of person to be a hero, and Beowulf and Batman both portray those characteristics of being one during their time periods.
Beowulf was considered a hero during his era of time because of the traits that he portrayed, and the characters he slayed to protect the Geats. “I’ve never know fear, as a youth I fought in endless battles. I am old, now, but will still fight again,” (56). In this quote Beowulf is stating that even though his age is affecting his battles, and he still doesn’t know what fear is at his age. He’s willing to risk his life to protect the Geats, and he eventually is slayed when batting the dragon. His bravery, loyalty, honor, and superhuman physical strength are what classify him as hero. “Within six hours, a demand for ten million dollars was made. The Lamont family, the Mayor, The G.C.P.D and even the F.B.I all wanted to pay the ransom to get the boy back. Everyone but me,” (3). Everyone but Batman wanted to just give them the money rather fighting for the boy's life, but Batman wasn’t going to let that stop him from saving the boy without them having to give them the money, By doing this Batman shows the characteristics of a hero, and his bravery is portrayed as eventually saves the boy. In the society you can see by the quote that money wasn’t a big deal to the family as they were going to just pay the ransom to get the boy back, but being the hero Batman is he just acted and got the boy
