This shows that not all people living in poverty are identical. Both the book and the movie portray images of hope hidden amongst the pile of hopelessness. In both the film and the book, the setting is in a place of poverty and the characters are searching for a hope in a pile of garbage. The book is placed in a slum of Annawadi, outside of the rich Mumbai and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil is the location of the film. Both share a similar story of poverty, disease, hunger, dirt, and fear along with a tiny spark of light. In the movie, the hope is easier to find than in the book. The book doesn’t contain any true victories, but it consists of small ones. “Behind the Beautiful Forevers” places a thought in the minds of the readers as they realize that in most cases, the rich need the poor, as discomforting as that may seem. Without the people of Annawadi, the economy of Mumbai would not be as successful. Both stories dip into the lives of the people and how they are struggling with the situation. It definitely didn’t have a happy tone to it, or a pleasing outcome in most parts, but it showed a small sense of hope. The people in it still managed to be good people despite the situations they were living in and some of them still kept motivation and had a positive outlook. For example, “Mornings, she went to college. Afternoons, in the family hut, she ran the slum’s only school. In the other hours she provided cooking, cleaning, water-collection, and laundry services to her household of five.” (Boo 57), people like Manju had booked schedules full of responsibility. While reading this book, I had some confusion with characters. Their names are unique to me and I was often confused with who was who and where a character fit into the story. After reading I started to get more of a grasp on the characters, but in order to fully understand what was going on, I had to write down the characters as I read. It was quite a depressing book, but it was a story that should be brought to the attention of many so that people are aware of what all is going on in some parts of our
