Similarities Between Baldwin III And Baldwin IV

Baldwin III and Baldwin IV encountered many problems and difficulties when coming into power. To overcome these problems they needed a strong government a strong defence and a strong leadership abilities all of which the two leaders were lacking. Nevertheless the leaders did make or attempt to make several advancements for the kingdom. It should also be considered that the majority of problems faced by both leaders were beyond their control and they had little or no involvement in creating.
To begin with Baldwin III’s reign was ultimately introduced to the beginning of the political infighting within Jerusalem. His parents King Fulk and Queen Melisende introduced the two rivalling factions competing for control; this infighting spiralled into

This created a power vacuum and the two factions emerged once again and cause more disruption in the government. The first faction was linked with his paternal side and lead by Raymond III of Tripoli and the other stemmed from his maternal side and was lead by his Mother Agnes of Courtenay. This once again made the government weak. With the two factions constantly competing for a candidate to have power, Jerusalem was neglected and the Nobles free to act in ways that would usually not be allowed. This became a forefront problem when Baldwin was looking for a husband and future ruler of Jerusalem as his nephew who was his heir’s father died. Baldwin knew his sister could not rule alone so he selected a suitable candidate, however Raymond III interjected as he wanted Baldwin’s sister to marry somebody he could easily control in order to maintain power over Jerusalem. So he launched an invasion essentially launching a civil war. Worried by the growth of Saladin’s power he refused to renew the peace that Raymond III had made with him when Regent. In November 1177 Baldwin’s forces inflated a crushing defeat on Saladin’s invading army at the battle of Mont Gisard. He then in 1180 recognised that he couldn't fight Saladin with his current government upheaval so made a truce with him showing that he was trying to protect Jerusalem and Outremer the best he could under current circumstances. Baldwin IV while his successes where small it cannot be said that he did not try to fix the problems and use his initiative to try and solve problems.
