Racism is an issue in both past and present day. Martin Luther King Jr. had a dream for his people, for freedom and equality among all African-Americans. There are many comparisons between Dr. Kings “I Have a Dream...” speech and the novel To Kill a Mockingbird. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and Atticus Finch are very similar in personality. They show true courage, when standing up against others to spread their message of equality. For example, Atticus Finch who is a defense attorney, is disgusted with the way racism has negatively impacted the Maycomb society. Atticus is defending an African-American man named Tom Robinson, after Tom was charged with sexual assaulting a white woman. He then decides to stand up to the racism and open everyone's eyes through the court case. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was another man who stood up to racism and believed all men are equal. Dr. King stated, "I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the colour of their skin but the content of their characters” (18). As Atticus said in his speech “this case is as simple as black and white”. Martin Luther King mentioned, “Five score years ago a great American in whose symbolic shadows we stand today signed the Emancipation Proclamation. This momentous decree is great beacon of light and hope millions of slaves who have been seared in the flames of withering injustice” (2). King is talking about how Abraham Lincoln declared all slaves shall be free.
