In the play Antigone by Sophocles and the play A Raisin in the Sun by Lorainne Hansburry, feminism is a strong undertone in both stories. Both plays feature a strong female role with some weak male characters. However, some women in the plays are oppressed, like Antigone who is not allowed to given her late brother a proper burial. Beneatha also experienced some struggles when an obstacle comes between herself and her dream of becoming a doctor and practicing medicine. The lens of feminism, helps portray the female characters as strong and independent, which is the opposite belief of women in the societies these characters are living in.
Feminism is a controversial issue in modern day American and people either fully support it or are fully against it. The concept of feminism is confusing to some people because they think it means that females want more rights and to be superior than men. She is oppressed by the ruler of her town, King Creon, who doesn't let Antigone and her sister, Ismene, bury their late brother. Antigone is engaged to Creon’s son Haemon, however, Creon disapproves of their relationship because he despises Antigone. Creon banishes Antigone and Haimon to a cave. They are both extremely sad about it. Creon soon realizes that he was wrong and he needs to free them. Antigone is so distraught over her situation that she decides that suicide is the best answer to all her problems.
