The apparent theme that often strides for equality take away from individual rights is evident in George Orwell’s Animal Farm and Ray Bradbury’s novel Fahrenheit 451. In both works, examples of independent thought being restricted as a sacrifice for fairness continue to be obvious in both stories. In Fahrenheit 451, Beatty explains that books must be burned in order to let tolerance for all prevail in society. It states, “colored people don’t like Little Black Sambo. Burn it. White people don’t feel good about Uncle Tom’s Cabin. Burn it” (Bradbury 59). This quote is significant to the theme of independent thought being restricted for equality because these books that are claim to be evil are works of literature that address racism and inequality that they do not want people in their civilization to reflect on and to think about.
