Ancient Rome and modern day United States have a lot of similarities, just many, many years of difference. Though Rome is only as big as North Carolina today, several modern day ideas lay in Rome’s ancient days. Much of our history comes from ancient Romans or is slightly similar to their ways of life. Despite varying differences, many of their ways are very closely related to our society. Things such as government, laws, and warfare resemble ours today. The American republican system started based off ideas from the Roman republican ideas and concepts. The first one was ruled by Crassus, Pompey, and Julius Caesar. Soon, Caesar defeated Crassus and Pompey, becoming a dictator. Our society has never been ruled by a dictator, only republicans and democrats. Caesar’s death was definitely one to remember. Led by his friend Brutus, a large group of senators stabbed Caesar to death in 44 CE. Rulers in the second triumvirate were Lepidus, Antony, and Octavian, Caesar’s heir. Octavian went in Caesar’s footsteps and defeated the other two rulers and took control of Rome. He was also the first official emperor of Rome. After the triumvirates, emperors were popular, but the most hated was Nero. He became heir through birth. His mother was very conceited and wanted constant attention and having a son would make her more of a part of the royal family since he would become heir when Claudius died. Nero was a very harsh ruler, resembled by Hitler, Nero killed any Christians in Rome and had them crucified. He sent his guards to kill his mother and when they found her, she said, “Stab me in the womb, it bore Nero.” After Nero came the five good emperors, Nerva, Trajan, Hadrian, Antoninus Pius, and Marcus Aurelius. Trajan and Hadrian are the most remembered of the five because they were great military leaders, expanded the empire, and had great architectural visions and buildings. The very last emperor was coincidentally named Romulus Augustus,
