When Canada is compared in both All Good Children, and our modern day society, many similarities can be seen. The main similarity is the fact that Canada is commonly seen as an escape from an oppressive United States, and that does not end with All Good Children. Max (the main character) is looking for an escape from the United States when it proves to no longer be a safe environment, yet faces doubts that it may not be the safe haven that was promised; “Maybe we should all stay,’ I say. …show more content…
When there was an imminent danger, and they needed to escape, they chose Canada. When they made it, it proved to be as much of a safe haven as they had hoped. Another similarity between All Good Children’s Canada, and our modern Canada, is the state of economic collapse they are both in. “As if Canadians needed more reasons to be worried. The collapse in oil prices that began more than a year ago, and has resumed of late, snuffed out Alberta’s energy boom more quickly and deeply than anyone expected” (Sorensen). This shows that the children in All Good Children are treated differently than in our modern day society when it comes to how they are expected to behave, and how they will guarantee said behavior. Another difference, when it comes to the schools in both societies is how the schooling system works. A definition of ‘public school’ explain this, “A school that is maintained at public expense for the education of the children of a community or district” (dictionary.com). This verifies that schools in our modern society are much different than they are in All Good Children. Safe to say, the differences within All Good Children’s and our modern day society’s schooling systems are
