“Be careful who you trust, the devil was once an angel.” The Crucible, by Arthur Miller talks about how witchcraft was before. As well as how many people were accused by being a witch. Especially women because they thought that women had too much time for themselves that they decided to do or start something dangerous. In The Crucible, the characters of Elizabeth Proctor and Abigail Williams can be compared and contrasted through Witchcraft, Love, and Lies. To begin with, Elizabeth was never a witch, nor had any contact with the devil. Unlike Abigail, she did have contact with the devil, she even drank blood to kill Elizabeth. “You drank blood, Abby! You didn’t tell him that!” (pg. 175). Betty was acting crazy and started to yell everything …show more content…
Because Abigail lied and accused many people of being a witch just to be with John and she would deny if someone accused her. Unlike Elizabeth, who was about to die just for protecting John because she really loved him and would do anything for him. Abigail even accused of Elizabeth of being a witch with puppets and stabbing her. “Goody Proctor always kept poppets.” ( pg. 217). She kept lying to Danforth about being stabbed in the lower stomach, she kept repeating it was Elizabeth, but it wasn't her she stabbed herself to blame Elizabeth. Hoping they would hang Elizabeth and leaving John alone with her. Compared to Elizabeth’s lie, she lied to help protect her husband John because even though he had an affair with Abigail, she still loved her husband and would do anything for him. “ My husband- is a goodly man, sir.” ( pg. 223). She lied to Danforth about John having an affair with another woman, while he was married. But she lied to protect her husband because she couldn't stand to see her husband being hang or for his name taken away for a mistake like that. So once again, Elizabeth and Abigail are very different because one lied to be saved and stay with the love of her life and the other lied to save her

Furthermore the author gives us a glimpse into Abigail 's first plan to get kill off Goody Proctor so it is not hard to infer how willing she will go to make John hers which we can assume is how she came up with her second excuse/plan to make Elizabeth gone once her first idea failed. In most people 's opinion you’ve got to be really desperate or committed to something, if you can accuse an innocent person of witchcraft knowing what will most likely happen to that person and don 't feel an ounce of remorse for what you have done. Proving Abigail doesn’t care what happens to anyone as long as in the end she gets John Proctor. Not to mention no one had any suspicions of witchcraft in Salem until after the girls danced in the woods and Betty and Ruth fell “ill”.…

In doing what she does, she hurts many people but helps herself not get in trouble. She shows power more than any other character in this book because everything seemed to go wrong mainly because of her. In Act 1, Betty Parris also reveals that Abigail had tried to harm Elizabeth using witchcraft (“You drank a charm to kill Goody Proctor!”), following which Abigail became violent and told her never to disclose that fact. Hence, we can see that getting revenge on Elizabeth Proctor was a matter of great personal importance to Abigail. She does so by accusing Elizabeth of witchcraft and Danforth believes her and Elizabeth is arrested. When Elizabeth was tried later, much of the evidence against her was Abigail's word against hers, and although she was never convicted or sentenced like the other victims, the mere fact that she, a respected farmer’s wife, could be convicted shows that the law then was being manipulated by Abigail for motives like vengeance. John…

After Proctor refuses to have her anymore, she plans to take Elizabeth out through having her accused and hanged for witchcraft. “Abigail were stabbed tonight; a needle were found stuck in her belly-” (Miller 72). She becomes fully devoted to accusing people of witchcraft in order to sentence Elizabeth and unfortunately it takes time for people to question her truthfulness because Abby is very convincing and has a strong following of people behind her.…
