To every person’s personality, there is an opposite… In Arthur Miller’s play he emphasizes on that with two certain characters. The Crucible is a play written by Arthur Miller, it is set in Salem, Massachusetts during 1692. It is about a man named John Proctor, his wife Elizabeth Proctor, and his ex-mistress Abigail Williams. Hurt by John Proctor not loving her, she seeks revenge on Elizabeth, taking down everyone with her. Elizabeth is considered a saint in a town full of sinners and Abigail is considered the biggest sinner of all. Elizabeth Proctor is considered a saint because of the way she is kind, honest, and caring, especially for her family. “From above, Elizabeth is heard softly singing to the children. ” (The Crucible p. 487). “Oh posh! We were dancin’ in the woods last night, and my uncle leaped in on us. She took fright is all.” (The Crucible, Arthur Miller, p. 469) This quote shows Abigail lying to Proctor about what really happened in the woods. “... And tell him what she said to you last week in her uncle’s house. She said it had naught to do with witchcraft, did she not?” (The Crucible, Arthur Miller, p. 489). In this quote Elizabeth is encouraging John to tell the truth about what Abigail told him about what happened in the woods. “She speaks of Abigail and I thought she were a saint, to hear her. Abigail brings the other girls into the court, and where she walks the crowd will part like the sea for Israel…” (The Crucible, Arthur Miller, p. 488). This quote is Elizabeth telling John about the “proper” court they have in Salem, this shows just how manipulative Abigail can be, considering she fooled the whole town. “Why she’s weeping, what ails you child?
