In A Raisin in the Sun the three main women take care of the family home none stop. Ruth who is a hard working determined mother stays at home and does her job as a wife, which is to clean the house and make all the food with help from her mother Lena and Beneatha. This is very similar to the gender roles of women in The House on Mango Street. Esperanza who sees the gender role forming around her explains how women in her community all do the same thing. Most of them stay indoors and dont venture far from their home. For example, Mamacita doesn't leave her house because she is afraid of the new world around her and she stays inside and takes care of the family home.
