Although their situations are very different Ishmael in the novel A Long Way Gone by Ishmael Beah and Chris from the film The Pursuit Of Happyness directed by Gabriele Muccino both exhibit similarities in their journey to success.
To begin both characters Chris and Ishmael both lose their homes in their journey. Ishmael is forced to leave his home because of the war that has broke out, he is accepting to go back to his home and see his family once the war is over;

Ishmael proves this when he escapes his country to go to New York City. “ I left on October 31, 1997, while it was still a little dark outside. The curfew was still in place, but I needed to leave the city before the sun came out. It was less dangerous to travel at this hour, as some of the gunmen were dozing off and the night made it difficult for the militiamen to see me from afar.” (209) With this in mind Ishmael wants to leave Sierra leone and the war does not stop him from leaving, even though it is extremely dangerous and scary to leave on his own he leaves with no fear so he can make it to New York City to get away from the war. Chris believes that anyone can do anything no matter what anyone says.

You got a dream… You gotta protect it. People can’t do somethin’ themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it. If you want somethin’, go get it. Period.
This explains that Chris does not let anyone get in his way of his goals that he wants to accomplish in order to be a successful stockbroker. He knows that he can not be put down by others no matter what they say or who they are. Chris is able to show his son Christopher some valuable advice because his has experienced negativity by others.
