Journal Entry The movie “A Time to Kill” is similar to the classic novel “To Kill a Mockingbird” as a white lawyer is defending an innocent African American man, but the predominantly white jury is the only obstacle that both men have of getting freedom and receiving true justice. The ending is where the two break apart as Carl Lee Hailey is pronounced innocent and gets to live, while Tom Tom Robinson ( still at court but believes that Atticus will fail) dies while trying to escape prison. Both the novel and film depicts how the justice system in the south is not fair as the jury cannot see beyond the skin colour of the accused. I believe that the actions that Carl Lee Hailey did was justified as the two rapists Billy Ray Cobb and Pete…

Books can be similar and different. In Lee’s To Kill A Mockingbird and Gaines’ A Lesson Before Dying they both share similar themes and characters, but they also have a world’s difference. To Kill A Mockingbird is told in perspective of a financially stable white girl during The Great Depression. A Lesson Before Dying is told by a black man who is struggling in life while trying to help a friend die like a man.…

The Murder of Emmett Till Getting away with murder is never the right thing. In the biographical story Getting Away With Murder by Chris Crowe, Emmett Till’s killers did just that: they got away with murder. Not only that, but they also got paid for telling stories about how they killed Emmett. I highly recommend this book to people that are into murder stories. This book is very descriptive.…

Just Mercy by Bryan Stevenson exhibits the theme instead of punishment, society should focus on mercy and empathy; specifically within the criminal justice system. Human Indignity “Now is the time to rise from the dark and desolate valley of segregation to the sunlit path of racial justice.” (Martin Luther King Jr) Devil in a Blue Dress by Walter Mosley, A Lesson Before Dying by Ernest J Gaines, and Fences by August Wilson are all pieces that are set in the South during the darkest times of segregation and racial violence. Devil in a Blue Dress takes place in 1948, a time where blacks are neither accepted nor enslaved. Although they are not necessarily slaves they are still far from being treated as equals. The main character, Easy, struggles to make a living and also cannot handle the segregation in the south, so he finds himself living in L.A. searching for a woman named Daphne Monet while getting…

Apollonian and Dionysian are mentioned as opposites in the novel, The Birth of Tragedy/ The Case of Wagner by Friedrich Nietzsche. Such that a Dionysian artist is best defined as one in primal unity with pain and contradiction, and an Apollonian one is reflected as a symbolic dream image. In addition, to be more specific on the topic, Apollonian is based on reason and logic and Dionysian is based on chaos. However, according to Nietzsche Dionysian is important because it emphasizes the harmony that could be revealed in one’s chaotic experience. The differences and tensions between these two are best described as the reason for all great tragedies within art.…

Final Essay The three stories I will be writing about are Devil in a Blue Dress, A Lesson Before Dying, and Fences. Devil in a Blue Dress and A Lesson Before Dying are told from the perspective of an African American male. Although fences is not told from the perspective of an African American, due to it being a play, its story is centered around an African American family. All these stories focus on segregation and hatred towards African Americans in different ways.…

Introduction Capital punishment has been a topic of much debate for many years with very differing points of view. Much of the research done about capital punishment is based on the public opinions, making it an issue close to peoples morals and idealistic thought. The news media then caters to the leaning of the public’s morals. In dealing with capital punishment, the news media tends to focus on three different popular mentalities; the ‘eye for an eye’ mentality, punishment should fit the crime mentality, and the declaring it inhumane treatment of individuals mentality. By focusing on these three views, the media has been able to help inform the public according to the prevailing view of the individual case.…
