One might think that it’s not very likely that two novels written approximately 66 years apart would have much in common. In this essay I have digged deep to find similarities between Animal Farm (by George Orwell, 1945) and Shatter Me (Tahereh Mafi, 2011).
Totalitarianism a system of government that is centralized and dictatorial and requires complete subservience to the state.1 Is shown in both books, in Animal Farm it is the pigs on the farm and in Shatter Me it is shown through the governing body Titled ‘The reestablishment’.
Rebuilding society with lies
The wish to rebuild society so that every individual is equal is shown in both books, but in Animal Farms it is only about the animals being equal. In Shatter Me The …show more content…
The rest of the individuals in Shatter Me don’t know what is going on behind closed doors but the other animals in animal farm know what is going on, they bought squealers lies and accepted the inequality. Later in Animal Farm the pigs do no longer help out but they still eat luxuriously compared to the hard working animals who eat too little and work too hard for their own good.
On the topic of luxury, The Reestablishments workers live in luxury while the rest of the citizens of the planet live ordinarily or poorly. It’s similar in Animal Farm when the pigs move into the farmhouse and starts to sleep in beds, sleeping in beds was going against the fourth commandment ‘no animal shall sleep in a bed’6 the pigs alter the commandment to ‘no animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets’.7
When the other animals on the farm realise what is going on The pigs lie and tell the animals that they need it because they need their rest after the daily effort of running the farm the animals comply. They have promised the citizens to fix the planet, which they are doing but only a few privileged get access to it. The Reestablishment will get rid off or lock up anything or anyone that could be a threat to the government. The Reestablishment locked juliette up for they thought she would be a threat to society. After 264 days9 of being abused and locked up in an asylum, She got released but still under the reesablishmnets guard and controll. The Reestablishment realised they could use Juliette as as a weapon hence why they “released”
