Similarities And Differences Of My Different Speech Community

My Different Speech Communities I belong to multiple different speech communities, but I have two main ones I consider what makes me. According to Paul Robert’s essay “Speech Communities” a speech community is made in certain ways “these communities which sometimes have their own dialects, their own jargon, and their own codes , meanings ,and pronunciations--are formed by a variety of factors, according to Roberts, including ‘age, geography, education, occupation, social position’ “. The two speech communities that I think are the most important to me are home and school. I am going to talk about the differences and similarities between my speech community at home and at school. I consider my speech community at home a very relaxed …show more content…
At school my speech community can differ depending on what class you are in. No teacher is the same, one may expect certain word that another would greatly disapprove of. The teacher I have first hour is Cody Miller. Mr. Miller is one of my teachers that is more lenient with slang but still has a rule of no profanity. He is one of the youngest teachers we have so I think that effects how he views slang and how we use …show more content…
Her rules are the same in 8th hour as they are in 5th hour. She will let slang go by but she would prefer if you did not use profanity. Although it is the end of the day she may let a few more cuss words go by then she would during 5th hour. After school is over comes football practice. And at football practice it is a completely different story then it is at home and at school. At football practice the adrenalin is pumping and everyone is a little more hyper then they are at school so more profanity is said then would be said at school. Our coaches during practice will let about anything slide by because it is football and things are going to be said. As long as it is not to put anyone down, and only to either bring someone up, or emphasize something they are ok with that being used. I have thought a lot about this topic lately because like Amy Tan said in her essay “Mother Tongue” “I was made keenly are of the different Englishness I do use” this topic was brought to my attention. And I had never really thought about how differently I talk in different places. From home, to school, to football practice, my speech used is very different in some ways, but also very similar in other ways, and they are always

Public speaking can be very hard for some people, and it can make a huge first impression. In the book An Essential Guide to Public Speaking by Quentin Schultze it goes deeper than just talking to a regular audience. It talks about being a Christian and handling public speaking. This is a great book to learn about how to be a public speaker and a Christian but not to lose your audience by talking too much about God or not enough. When someone says a free society in public speaking it opens, it appeals to a lot more people.…

We use slang in English to communicate effectively in an informal manner, and with some degree of humor. In Slang Origins by Woody Allen, the author explains how a variety of phrases became known as slang. Allen included stories of slang derived from marital customs and how the woman accepted or rejected the proposal, misunderstandings because of not being able to hear what someone else said properly, and ones that started because of something a single person did that was amusing. These origins stories sound foolish but I believe that the humor is what caused them to be passed down generations and remain prevalent in society today. Some of the origins of slang come from marital customs such as “got into a beef” or “to look down one’s nose”.…

I am not saying that outside of the workplace I do not curse on occasion, since I do, but I know when I enter the work environment that it is not acceptable. For example, where I work some of my co-workers will use curse words while on audits or in the office and I become uncomfortable. I become uncomfortable for two main reasons. The first reason is that if the client were to come in and hear them talking that way, the client would then view our company as unprofessional. By using those swear words they are giving the whole company a negative image.…

As society moves progressively through the years, and with curse words becoming a regular part of our everyday language, curse words have lost almost complete shock value, and as a result, has stopped being viewed as offensive. You stub your toe, you cry out “Fuck” in pain. You get frustrated, you might give up and sigh, “Fuck it!” You’re friends are joking and making fun of you, you can retort in a jesting manner, “Fuck you.” The same word was used in all of these phrases in three different ways, but is never used at someone’s expense.…

Isaac Washington Isaac Washington is a junior African-American student at Jefferson Davis High School, a school known for its academic excellence. When Isaac was a freshman, he was among a group of African-American students that was transferred to Jefferson Davis High School due to a court order to desegregate the metropolitan schools. Because of the desegregation of Jefferson Davis High School, Isaac’s pre-dominantly black school was shut and the students were bused long distances and spread out among the district’s white schools. Consequently, Isaac’s classmates have little connection with the school’s past and present; as they cannot participate extra-curricular activities due to the distance from their homes and the need to ride the…

Do the English that is spoken at home while growing up have any effect on how well you performed in school or around your community? I grew up in Los Angeles, CA in a low-income area that was infested with a lot of gang activities, criminal activities, and drug related activities. Growing up in this type of environment I was accustomed to speaking improper English also know as slang. Talking and writing improper English was common for me in an everyday situation for example when communicating with friends even family members I would open up with what's up instead of answering with hello how are you doing. Throughout high school improper English would transition into my schoolwork, instead of writing I am, I would've wrote I is.…

Swearing can be a way to emphasize what you are saying. Thomas Murray shows how curse words can express many different emotions and feelings. When Kourtney says that we could “get fucked up,” she is putting an emphasis on the idea of getting drunk and having fun with our friends. When I said we could “rent a fucking cabin,” I was showing that I was excited about the idea of renting a cabin with all of our friends. We talked about how when the cops showed up to a party that Brycelyn and I were attending and my mother came to pick me up, she used swearing because of how angry she was.…

Censorship in Students’ Lives Today Over the period of seven years, three thousand seven hundred and thirty-six requests were recorded asking for certain books to be removed from library shelves across America. This was due to various parents’ beliefs that the topics discussed in these books were not suitable for children. This is all something called ‘censorship’. Censorship is defined as “the suppression of words, images, or ideas that are [considered] “offensive” [and] happens when some people succeed in imposing their personal, political, or moral values on others” (“What is Censorship?”).…

When I came to the United States, I was educated and spoke English. It was British English; the pronunciation, spellings of some words and some of the grammar were completely different. When I enrolled in middle school, everybody made fun of me; all the students thought I was not smart because I could not communicate with them in American English. However, it was not just hard to communicate with other men, but it was also hard to communicate with women because I am a man. I believe that there is a difference in how individuals communicate; it all depends on a person’s gender and the language he or she grew up speaking.…

I definitely talk differently depending on the people that are around me. I do this depending on how comfortable I am with someone and how I want them to view me. For example, when I am talking to my friends I act like a complete idiot because I really don’t care what they think about me, and I know that they are not going to view me different. Also, they act the same way, so it makes me feel better, and they also don’t determine what my life is going to be like in the future. On the other side of the spectrum, if I’m talking to a coach or scout, I am going to show all of my respect and attention.…

I noticed this two years ago when I moved here with my family. We can define and recognize people from other countries, but still we try to communicate in the best possible way and to learn the meaning of special words when we are talking to them. Inside the United States, we have lots of different communities, such as American, Black, Hispanic, and others. The interesting thing about this is that inside them we have lots of sub-communities which have their own dialects. For example, in American there are differences in speech in the different states, and even inside one state.…
