In the novel, four prisoners attempted to escape, but were caught. They were shot and no one could speak out as long as they wanted to live and remember. On the other side, the film shows the men handing over money to the guard, attempting to escape, and getting caught and hung; all the while, the Rabbi spoke in protest. This is wrong because it is unrealistic and does not show what would have actually happened. The Nazis were portrayed as less strict in the movie; they would not have allowed the Rabbi to speak out for as long as he did.…

The Devil's Arithmetic by Jane Yolen delivers the message of remembering much better and more aptly than the movie adaption directed by Donna Deitch, because of the relationship of the characters, the shooting scene, and the scenes and characters omitted from the movie. The relationships of the characters in the novel increase the importance of the theme of remembering much better than the relationships of the characters in the movie. For example, in the novel, some of the prisoners in the concentration camp try to escape one night, and most end up being caught. They are publicly being shot the next day, and Jane Yolen says one of the men “[B]ent down and kissed the top of [his wife’s] head as the guns roared.” That man was named Shmuel and was Hannah’s(the main character) uncle.…

Lastly, there is a significant difference in the chemistry and feelings of love, at least that are portrayed in the book are nonexistent in the movie. One major aspect that plays a large role in book to movie adaptations is the screenwriter’s ability to transform the book.
