One important similarity between the book and film is that it both had a scene where Hassan was getting raped by Assef and Amir running away. They both started with Amir winning the kite tournament and Hassan running to retrieve Amir’s kite. While Hassan was running, he encountered Assef and his friends. They cornered him into the alleyway and took his virginity. Although Amir witnessed this sexual assault, he ran away in fear of Assef: "In the end, I ran. I ran because I was a coward. I was afraid of Assef" (Hosseini 77). The book showed that Amir was scared by letting us know his thoughts. The film showed that Amir was scared of Assef because there were scenes where Assef was bullying him and also Assef is two times bigger than Amir, which is a disadvantage in size. This is the theme that I have concluded based on the book and film because if Amir did not run away and saved Hassan, there would be a high possibility that Hassan would still be living together with Baba and Amir. However, Amir ran away, pretending that he never saw what happened. By ignoring this problem, it made Amir’s life more complicated. Not only does Amir has to live his life in guilt for more than 10 years, but also he needs to get Sohrab from Afghanistan. Trying to get Sohrab out of Pakistan was the difficult part. He was taken by the Taliban, and Assef was part of it. By trying to take care of Sohrab in order to get rid of his sins, it costed him his life-since he almost experienced death. This situation would have been avoided had not Amir secretly forced Hassan out of the house. If this did not happen, then Hassan and Amir would be living happily in America, away from Afghanistan, away from all the heartache and struggles, away from sins. The novel did a better job of conveying the theme because it had more events and details that helps the development of the theme. A few examples are: Amir’s jealousy to Hassan, Amir making fun of Hassan’s span of knowledge, rape scene, Amir trying to accuse Hassan of theft, and the Hospital scene. The film did show any of those events, only the rape scene. This makes the film lack a lot of sympathy for the characters, making it
