Author’s purpose is the reason why the author wrote about a specific topic. Some examples are to inform, persuade, entertain, or explain. Another example is developing a theme. Developing a theme is an example because authors like to show how themes change in people throughout the book. One book is “To Kill a Mockingbird.” The other book is “The Help.” Both books deal with racism and take place in the 1900s. The general plots of each book are different though. “To Kill A Mockingbird is about the Finch family and how the father, Atticus, has to defend a black man in court. “The Help is about an African-American maid who takes care of a little white girl, Mae, and how Skeeter writes about things that happen in their lives. “To Kill A Mockingbird” and “The Help” show the same themes of justice, being a good role model, and equality, however “The Help” shows a different perspective through setting. In the text it states, “This time I split my knuckle to the bone on his front teeth. My left impaired, I sailed with my right, but not for long.” (Lee 84) Scout is defending her father, just like he would do for her, thus receiving the justice he deserves. The Finch family is showing justice towards one another by sticking up for each other and realizing that they would do the same for them. Another example of justice comes when Atticus explains to Scout that Boo is a nice guy and not the mean man that the children portray his as. In the text it states, “Atticus was right. One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them.” (Lee 154) Atticus does not judge a book by it’s cover and gives people a chance, also, Atticus is being just and giving Boo an opportunity even though not many people like him.
