Odysseus was saved because he asked Athena to disguise him as a beggar, but most importantly he was saved by his son’s loyalty to him. Even though Telemachus hasn’t seen Odysseus since he was an infant, he remained loyal to his father throughout the twenty years that he was missing. With the help of his son’s trust and devotion Odysseus was able to save Telemachus and himself from a tragic ending. Although Agamemnon’s fate was different from Odysseus’, there was a similarity in their lives and that was their sons’ loyalty to them. Although Clytemnestra turned on her husband and ended up ending his life with the help of her suitor, not all of his family had turned on him. Just as Odysseus had a loyal son, so did Agamemnon. Agamemnon’s son, Orestes, came back to Argos several years later and had taken his revenge for Odysseus’ death by killing Clytemnestra, his mother. The differences are that Agamemnon’s wife was an unfaithful, vengeful woman, whereas Odysseus’ wife was faithful and patient. Due to their wives’ personalities each ended up with a different fate. Agamemnon ended up being murder by Clytemnestra as revenge for the death of their daughter, whereas Odysseus ended up coming back to a loving and patient wife who didn’t let the suitors get the best of her for the twenty years that he was gone. The similarities, however, are that both Agamemnon and Odysseus fought the Trojan war and that both Orestes, Agamemnon’s son, and Telemachus, Odysseus’ son, remained faithful to their fathers throughout the
