To begin with, in the movie 10 Things I Hate About You, Patrick shows that he cares for Kat Stratford by making sure that she gets home safe and by not taking advantage of her. He could have done whatever he wanted when she was in that state of mind, but he chose not to; by doing this he shows that he actually likes her and genuinely cares for her well being. While Petruchio was not in this exact same situation, one can still use it as an example to see how the characters are different. In the play, Petruchio lies to Katherine Minola’s father, Baptista Minola, Petruchio says that he has the consent of Katherine to marry and that Katherine likes Petruchio (2.1.343-345). Petruchio does this because he is being paid by the suitors for Katherine´s sister, Bianca, and he wants the money that would come from the dowry in their marriage. Through his lust for money, Petruchio clearly shows that he does not care for Katherine's opinions or well being; only for the money of Katherine’s father. He does not recognize what effect that he is having on her by lying to her father and for this, at the time, she hates him. To see this, one must look at the way their feelings change throughout their respective stories. To start, in 10 Things I Hate About You, Patrick´s feelings totally change from the beginning to the end of the movie. In the beginning, he does not want anything to do with Kat; to the extent that it takes a substantial amount of money for him to take interest in her (10 Things). Yet, at the end of the movie, he says that he does not want the money because he has real feelings for her (10 Things). This transition speaks volumes to show how kind and caring of a person Partick is; it also shows that he was willing to change for the good of the relationship. To contrast this, the exact opposite can be seen with Petruchio; his feelings remain static throughout the story, and one can infer that he doesn't feel enough emotion to change for Katherine. He goes into the marriage with his primary goal being to secure the money; after he accomplishes that he immediately changes his objective to taming Katherine. To illustrate this, directly after the wedding between Petruchio and Katherine he insists that they immediately leave and go back to Petruchio's home (3.2.215-231). He does this so that he can start the process to tame Katherine. By doing skipping the wedding party to gain control over his wife, Petruchio shows that he does not care about Katherine´s wellbeing and clearly shows that he only cares
