Over the past few weeks we’ve watched several movies pertaining to different historical battles and wars that have changed our world over time. Two movies that we recently spent time watching were The Longest Day and Saving Private Ryan. Both of these films depicted D-Day which occurred during World War II. Throughout this essay I will compare and contrast the two films. Some of the differences include: the movies effects as well as their storylines. Some similarities between the two films are the tones the films are set in and their success.
To begin, both films discuss the events of D-Day also codenamed as “Operation Overlord”. This operation took place with the Allies invasion of Fortress Europe on June 6, 1944. Around 160,000 Allied Troops arrived early that morning on the beaches of Normandy, …show more content…
Since the movie began with an older man in a cemetery upset and crying you automatically knew that the movie was going to be sad. And the next scene was the men about to be on the Normandy beach about to fight and they are scared therefore that tone is fear. Another similarity they have is the title of their movies because they describe what the movies will be about. For example, the title Saving Private Ryan gives the audience a hint that the cast is going to be saving someone. Same goes for the Longest Day, it tells the audience that D-Day was a long twenty-four hours. Finally, the films The Longest Day and Saving Private Ryan were two of the best cinematic representations of Operation Overlord. They are both very popular movies and contain well-known actors. When I was researching information about these movies most websites listed their top five or ten D-Day movies and these two were listed on each website. Both movies gained good critics and they both received some negatives. Both movies shown us that many lives were lost during this heroic
