Contrasting both films showing similar interpretations the night Juliet swallows the poison, the only difference is in the 1968 version where Juliet contemplates multiple other consequences that all deal with the plan's inefficiency, which foreshadows its actual failure. Comparingly, the most obvious difference in the two films is the tomb scene which proposed little similarities. In the 1996 version, Romeo arrives in Verona at the church and a person is at the front. There are already police chasing him as of having awareness of his return. Romeo grabs the person in front of the church and threatens to kill him if the police try to shoot him, there was a lot of commotion before Romeo entered the church. When he enters the church Romeo has a few lines before approaching Juliet’s body. The camera angles inform the audience of Juliet awakening with her slight hand movement and eyes opening which Romeo doesn’t see. This leads Juliet to see Romeo drink the potion, after which he sees Juliet alive and his facial expression identifies that he made a huge mistake. Juliet tries to kiss the poison off Romeo’s lips after realizing it wasn’t killing her she takes his gun and shoots herself in the head. Correspondingly in Zeffirelli’s version, Romeo opens the tomb by throwing a large rock at it. He enters the tomb and finds Juliet ‘dead.’ He tells her how much he loves her, which leads himself to drink the poison. Furthermore, after Romeo’s death, Friar Lawrence rushes in and finds Romeo dead on the floor. Juliet awakens with joy and questions Romeo’s whereabouts. Friar Lawrence explains Romeo killed himself and how his plan had failed. The plot develops where the Friar tries to persuade Juliet to come with him or be a nun, but she refuses. In the movie Romeo and Juliet, my favorite character was Mercutio. I thought he was the best out of everyone because he would make jokes, he was funny, and he was a loyal friend to many. I thought Mercutio in the 1968 film was better than the film in 1996, because he was more apparent through the movie. Mercutio was more dramatic in the ‘68 film compared to the ‘96 film. It had seemed this way because he had talked with more enthusiasm and acted with more heart to it as well.…

Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare is known to be one of the most relevant tragic love stories, even as it is read over 400 years after it was first published. Because of this relevancy, in 1996 the play was adapted into a film directed by Baz Luhrmann. The film transformed Shakespeare’s original into a more modern context, attempting to keep that relevancy in an era with a different society and contrasting morals. Through this translation of text to film, Luhrmann has changed certain aspects to adjust the audience’s perspectives on the story and on certain characters and has therefore lost some of the original meaning of the text. A significant change created was how the audience was positioned to view Romeo.…
