In both stories the country was the main seen in the start of the story. In private peaceful they live on the colonel's land which was a farm meaning a lot of their life was spent tending to the land and also playing on it. When the Colonel asked for all the men to go to the great war Tommo had to talk to Charlie quite a lot to get him to go to war. Once he agreed they went to register and join up. They said they were twins and that was the end of it. They were put into the same battalion due to the pals battalion law keeping towns together and a closer group. In Gallipoli Archie was running at his home in the country as well as riding horses. He was a promising runner and when he went to the national running carnival he met Frank who was another runner. Frank was different though because he was from the city. After the running carnival the light horses came out and took registrations from the men. This is because Private Peaceful was based in England and at that time England had a Pals Battalion law. This meant that the different battalions were the towns or areas meaning they were more like to know each other resulting in a closer bonded battalion. In Gallipoli on the other hand the Australian officers asked for specific different abilities to help with the war. Archie made it to the light horses which Frank didn’t due to not being able to ride a horse well. Frank then joined a ground brigade which didn’t require many skills at all. They were training in egypt at the training camps and were doing role play warfare. Franks battalion were running at Archies battalion and neither of them knew the other was there. Archie and Frank spotted each other and stopped the fighting to hug and talk to each other this didn’t go down well with the officers but they were alright with that because they were so excited to see one another. This shows that in England (Private Peaceful) there was more chance to know or see another person you know than in Australia (Gallipoli) but in Australia it was also optional to join the war.
In Conclusion Private Peaceful and Gallipoli had many similarities and differences. It’s hard to define each one as they all overlap but if you look into it carefully it shows that the different backgrounds and settings played a
