By Oedipus rejecting the fate given to him from the gods, he is saying that he is smarter and more powerful than the gods because he can control his own fate. Another example of how Oedipus is prideful is when he is newly appointed king and the villagers worshiped him like he was a god. Consequently, the villager’s actions heightened Oedipus’s ego. Similarly, Masha is prideful because she wants her family know how successful she is. In result, she treats her half sister, Sonia, as an after thought because it’s important to her that she proclaims her status to her family. Another example is when Masha attended the neighborhood costume party. While Masha was at the party, Sonia stole the attention from Masha which infuriated her. On the contrary, Oedipus and Masha also have some differences. Oedipus fails to recognize his fatal flaw before he can change the outcome of his fate. Boy Willie is discontent with were he is at in life. Boy Willie currently works on a farm, but he is determined to buy his own land which is something his family has never had the privilege to do. In addition, it will give Boy Willie status in the world because land symbolizes wealth and he will be equal to the white man. Similarly, Sonia is discontent with were she is at in life. For example, Sonia has done nothing in her life. She has so much free time throughout the day that she spends the whole day deciding what to do. In addition, Boy Willie has the attribute of determination. For example, Boy Willie drives an old beat up pick up truck full of watermelons from Missouri to Pittsburg in order to make money to achieve his aspiration of owning land. Further more, Boy Willie doesn’t stop harassing Berniece about selling the piano. In result, Boy Willie is not afraid to stand up for his goal. Conversely, Sonia is different than Boy Willie because in the Beginning of the play, Sonia doesn’t stick up for herself against Masha. Sonia obeys Masha’s obscure rules with out question. An example is when Sonia isn’t allowed to talk until four-thirty pm which is Masha’s nap time. However, as the play develops, Sonia because more confident and stands up against Masha. For example, Sonia refuses to go to the costume party as Masha’s dwarf and instead Sonia decides to be whatever she wants to
