In the play “Macbeth” and the novella “The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde” both authors use change as a key factor with the protagonists. However, key factors affect how they present these changes in the protagonists of the story, which consist of the time that the novella and play were written; why the book or play was written, and which way that they used on their protagonist from the list of things that could encourage change in a person. They would definitely have been successful in stating through another character that this is how the protagonist is. However, the difference in their opening scenes is how the protagonist is being presented, they are both presented in contrasting descriptions because of the way the story is set. Stevenson’s story does not show how the protagonist changes until the end so Stevenson uses lines as indications and hints to make us see the change. However, these changes are unclear so we cannot tell until the end, so at the beginning Stevenson makes us feel fearful of this character. The play begins with Macbeth starting off as a respectable man becoming someone who has changed because of manipulation and then has transformed totally because of how these prophesies has become dark and deep desires. This is clear through the way Shakespeare writes the lines of Macbeth throughout the play. For example, the fact that at the start, he speaks in blank verse using unrhymed iambic pentameter, but towards the end, he speaks using prosaic prose. The use of this change shows change in the character because the use of unrhymed iambic pentameter shows how he was enjoying his life as his speaking was poetic and was joyfully and willingly expressing his emotions in a very interesting way, showing that he was interesting at the beginning. But when he changes the way he speaks it shows that he has transformed into something different as he is speaking in prosaic prose. Connotations of prosaic is lacking imagination meaning that he does not have any features that are interesting or imaginative as if he speaks in a monotone voice and from a readers point of view from this generation and at the time it was writing they would interpret that he has been possessed by the devil. This is effective as it is an indication of change and makes the audience understand that change has definitely occurred.
