School district administrators are afraid of change. The flaws in the education systems should be fixed because telling teachers how to teach and students how to learn is impossible. In order for South Korea and the United States to improve their educational systems, there are three important contrasting differences the two countries should consider: the teacher-student relationships, extracurricular activities, and dress code policies. The differences are to help not only the students, but the teachers as well. Student-teacher relationships in and out of school are more approved in South Korea unlike the United States. South Korea is extremely strict allowing for no variation. If any one uniform is even slightly askew, the student must immediately purchase a new one and change. The name tag is to be on straight, the shirt is to be neatly tucked in, and the hair is to be groomed and a certain length. Wearing makeup, and dyeing hair is forbidden. If for any reason the student does not obey the rules, they will receive demerits. Once a student receives a specific number of demerits, the result is picking up trash and cleaning the bathroom after class. The policy adhered to South Korean students consider it a waste of time picking outfits and putting on makeup. In the United States, the school dress code policy is not as severe. Girls and boys must have their shoulders, breasts, bellies, and rear ends covered. Shorts and skirts need to be longer than mid-calf and undergarments need be out of sight. If a teacher confronts the student about their outfit, the only “punishment” is a school provided old shirt and bottom. Since all American high schools have janitors who clean up after the students, a disciplinary action would not be needed. American students are allowed to freely express themselves by wearing any type of clothing as long as they abide by the guidelines.
