In fact, they seem to be more different from one another than they are similar. One of the greatest differences between the two is how they see the world. Holden sees it as being an evil and corrupt place, as well as being full of phonies. Holden feels that everyone is a phony, besides his sister, even some people that he is acquaintances with. For example, Holden said, “I didn’t want to see it much but I knew old Sally, the queen of the phonies, would start drooling all over the place when I told her I had tickets for that because the Lunts were in it and all”(page 216). As you can see, Sally is someone Holden has known for a long time but he calls her a phony just like he does to people he doesn’t even know. Meanwhile, Pheobe is the exact opposite she is optimistic about the world and what it has to offer. She does not see the world the way her big brother, but she is also young and still full of life and energy. Holden has lost that sense of liveliness and hope for the world that we see in Phoebe. We see throughout the novel that nothing seems to make Holden happy, except for his dead brother Allie and Phoebe, however not even they make him truly happy. One example of how they’re similar to one and other is in their personalities. Each character has a stubborn side to them. For example, when Holden was very adamant about not giving any more money to Maurice when he was demanding money from Holden that was not the original amount. The elevator guy had told him one price but then Maurice demanded more money and Holden put up a good stubborn fight. Just like Holden, Phoebe has that stubbornness to her. For example, when Holden came to the apartment to see Phoebe, she continuously interrupts him to know why he is home so early. Since he will not give her the answer she wants, she decides to jump to the conclusion that he has been expelled from Pency.
