“The adults ignored him.” (pg. 223). Whether being cast off to the side or not acknowledged in the least, very rarely are we as children taken seriously in the “important” conversations. How could we have crucial ideas to contribute? We’re just kids, right? In chapter ten of Ender’s Game, Card introduces a new character named Bean. Now Bean, fresh off the shuttle, was one of the newer boys who had just arrived at the Battle School; “launchies” as the veterans called them. However, not only was Bean assigned to an army right off the bat, unlike most newcomers, but positioned in Ender Wiggin’s army, the most celebrated soldier in the Battle School. Immediately, he made a loud impression among the students, commanders, and administrators. While Orson portrays this character as both a strong soldier and leader, Bean’s childish characteristics, his indestructible mind-set and selfless compassion, are what prove him to be significant.
