Over the course of my working life, I have obtained two jobs; my first job, at Panera Bread and my current job, at the YMCA. Within these two jobs, I have noticed many similarities and differences. Each job has given me the opportunity to meet and interact with people daily, however, the daily interactions did have their differences. Each job also gave me the ability to gain responsibly and knowledge within a field of work, providing me with the ability to learn how to be the best worker I can be. The overall best aspect of working these two jobs were the friendships I gained in the process, although The Y has provided me with friendships far deeper than Panera Bread, I still gained acquaintances and friendships at Panera Bread. Panera Bread and the YMCA are similar as they both work around student’s schedule, providing them with reasonable hours. Working 30 hours a week and going to school full time can be stressful. Over time, I have learned how to manage my time. Working for these two companies has also helped me gain a sense of responsibility. Prior to my working days, I was very lackadaisical and often did not take responsibly for my own actions. Having bosses and a paying job helped me mature, now I am always prepared and ready for work on time. On the rare occasion, I am not on time, so I apologize and accept my mistake to learn from it, rather than try to push the blame onto something or someone else. The lessons given by my two jobs have been very valuable to me, I feel as though they have made more successful. My two jobs have not been all work though; I have also gained some of the best friendships I could ever ask …show more content…

In Amitai Etzioni’s essay, “Working at McDonald’s”, he boldly opens with “McDonald’s is bad for your kids. I do not mean the flat patties and the white-flour buns; I refer to the jobs teen-agers undertake, mass-producing these choice items.” His essay, through an eye-opening perspective, convincingly outlines how McDonald’s and fast food restaurants alike are bad for teenagers. With his strong use of comparing and contrasting traditional thoughts of teenagers in the fast food workforce versus his perspective of the effect of fast food restaurants, evidence based studies with statistics, and organizational flow, he clearly shows a perspective rarely touched on by many.…

While working for a startup, micro-sized accounting firm founded by my wife’s uncle, I found myself with the responsibility of leading the organization’s payroll service. In such a setting, this duty encompassed virtually all facets of business functions including sales, developing uniform system processes, managing information technology, nurturing client relations, and completing the payroll operations just to name a few. The company at that point grew from a single client having two employees to around 50 clients and a total of approximately 6,000 employees within a single quarter. Such growth paired with the lack of payroll-experienced employees within the organization led to a high stress environment fueled by crunched deadlines and on-the-job learning that usually led to serious error. Our team would find that in order to stay ahead of the deadlines from week to week, we would often need to work 50+ hours each week.…

It’s Always a Great Day at Johnny Rockets Finding a job in today’s market place, we can all agree on, is hard to achieve and maintain. “Climbing The Golden Arches” is an essay written by Marissa Nuñez published originally in New Youth Connections, republished in The Norton Sampler. The main idea of this essay is that although the road to a successful career is fraught with hardships, it can be overcome with hard work and determination. At the beginning of the essay, Nuñez describes a scene in which she and her cousin went to eat at McDonald’s and decided to try out for a job there out of curiosity. They filed their applications and about a month later had their job interviews in which both passed. The author was initially surprised to receive the job but that turned into happiness when she realized that she no longer would have to depend on her mother for money anymore.…
