Simba Performance Critique

At the top of the show an orange light comes to view. An unknown figure emerges from the darkness walking slowly. Suspense begins to build, then I hear it, a small drum and an instrument chant. Rafiki is now recognizable as she walks on stage sassily. The beat drops, then out of nowhere an ear-piercing velvet voice sings words that do not sound like english. As the scene progresses a beautiful array of animals and bright, vibrant lights come into view. Then Rafiki slowly rises to the top of Pride Rock, and aggressively presents simba to the rest of the ensemble and audience. The musical was filled with loud songs that had sincere meanings to them. The aggressiveness was used to emphasize the importance of the songs. The musical implicated …show more content…
This is because, this is a middle school musical, and they are not very reputable. Honestly I was blown away by the blocking in the musical, though at times they were quite inconsistent from show to show. The director must have taken quite a lot of time to make sure the blocking was perfected. He acting skills in the musical varied some of them reached up to broadway, others were better accustomed to singing and vocals. Young Simba demonstrated his acting skills perfectly, even better than adult Simba(he also did well). Mufasa was a bit shaky at the beginning, but continued smoothly as the show progressed. Nala was strong and fierce, but her best performance was the last one. Rafiki was a bit on the weaker side when it came to acting, but her vocals gave me chills. Zazu made me laugh so much, with his excessive exaggerations. The ensemble was also really good, when it came to carrying out the show. Overall they performed above expectations, I was blown away by their ability to mimic broadway. I’ll give the performance …show more content…
The set was a bit bland but the other design elements, pulled it all together. The lighting was the glue of the show. It changed moods, atmospheres and tones. The costumes looked like they were stolen from broadway. The three dimensional head pieces supported this opinion. The most eccentric and agreeably the best costume was Rafiki. It looked amazing with lights and her make up, astonished me. There was an absence of props, there were a few here and there but overall, the show was lacking in props. The mics were sometime inconsistent like the sound was varying, but it wasn't that noticeable. I ‘ll give the design elements 4.6/5.
The musical blew me away from the very first note till the bowing of characters, I was completely engrossed. The production was a success. Everything came into agreement. I watched it 4 times and I would recommend everyone should do so to. A notable character in the musical was Rafiki I thought the vocals were exemplary. I think this because she sang from her gut and with such confidence it left me speechless. The director should be proud of her cast because they were amazing. I would rate it ★★★★✩

Peter and the Starcatcher is an exhilarating and adventurous story that tells the tale of the well known free-spirited boy, Peter Pan’s backstory. Peter and the Starcatcher is based on the 2004 novel written by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson, which was fashioned into a play by Rick Elice. I had an exceptional experience of seeing the play on March 29, at 9:30, adapted by director, Kerry Bishop on the A.B Lucas Secondary School stage. This play certainly catches the whimsical and wonderful essence of the boy who never grew up and how he came to be. Starring Aidan Peters as Peter, Makayla Ashenden as Molly Astor, Michael Jenkinson as Black Stache and the entire A.B Lucas cast put together a humorous and heartwarming performance, leaving me on…

On November 22nd , 2015 , I had attended a play “A servant of Two masters” that played downtown Pittsburgh at the O’Reilly theater, the play was directed by Ted Pappas. He had put together a creative and intriguing play, having actors stay spontaneous and interact with the audience, therefore no parts would be found boring nor dry. All the actors had held up their end of their roles quite well, by fully disguising themselves as that character they were suppose to be during the entire play. In the play “A Servant of Two masters” is about a girl Clarice who originally had an arranged marriage but was called off due to her fiancé death, who was Federigo Rasponi of Turin.…

The first act primarily gave a background on how those townsfolk settled on Oklahoma Territory. It also illustrated Curly’s pursuit of Laurey, and Ado Annie’s love triangle. The second act was the true execution of everybody’s motives. Curly defeats Jud and wins Laurey over and Will Parker finally earns back $50 to take Ado Annie as his wife. I think the rhythm was smooth and cohesive.…

There was nothing spectacular about the choreography. All the acting or dancing was the same to mimic the acting and dancing in the movie. Of course some actions were different because they did not have the same set design and props but pretty much everything seemed to be a very truthful adaptation of the musical. All of the actors were very similar in basically wearing the same exact costumes as the actors in the musical where wearing, which made it extremely easy to distinguish who was who in the musical. The call backs and vulgar remarks that started at the beginning of the musical continued throughout the whole show.…

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love musicals and some of my favorites include: Wicked, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Footloose, and Phantom of the Opera, but this musical was barbaric. There was no excitement or emotion portrayed by any of the actors throughout the show; especially during the musical numbers. The one and ONLY CHARACTER who had enthusiasm, energy, and emotion was Tyler Smith as Buddy the Elf. He was constantly moving, laughing, smiling, cracking jokes, dancing, and putting effort into each and every movement he…

The performance that I saw for She Kills Monsters was the preview show. My expectations for this play was different from the I and You play. Since the play was about a dead sister I expected the whole thing to be sad or depressing kind of but it was the complete opposite. The play had many twist and turns surprising moments that I didn’t even expect. A live theater that I saw before this play would be I and You, these plays were similar relating that they both were about death yet, each play expressed death in two different ways, she kills monster was more of a comical play.…

“A Christmas Story”, the play directed by Susan Ferley and performed at December 2nd, 2015, was a well-performed play in my opinion. The story is about a boy named Ralphie Parker wanting a BB gun: a Red Ryder Carbine Action 200-shot Range Model air rifle with a compass in the stock and "this thing which tells time" for his Christmas present. In the story, he does all he can to receive that gun but their parents reject his wish because they thought it was too dangerous for him. The writer, Jean Shepherd, wrote about a very boring outline of the story but made the story humorous and exciting for the audience. The performances in the “A Christmas Story” was very well done by the actors.…

“A Very Potter Musical” was written and performed in 2009 by StarKid Productions in the University of Michigan campus. At first glance the musical seems like it would be rather interesting purely because it is every Harry Potter dorks dream come true. However, upon further look into the musical people begin to realize that the music isn’t really that great. For a person who does not have a musical background the play is rather enjoyable but when one turns a musical ear to it they want to run the other way. “A Very Potter Musical” presents us with Harry Potter’s second year but contains all of the final scenes from books four, five, six, and seven.…

The set was made to look as close to a high school back in the 50s despite it being 2016. They made the characters look from the 50s making them wear leather jackets with slicked back hair and the ladies long dresses with white socks and shoes. Even the tiny details of the food they ordered in the musical, such as the striped red and white straws in the soda bottles or the cups for the milkshakes. The types of cars in the musical, once again, despite being 2016, are retro and match the 50s taste of cars back then. The cast uses dialogue that was used back in the day, even though they may not make sense now.…

Singin’ in the Rain (1952) directed by Gene Kelly and Stanley Donen is one of Hollywood’s most famous musicals. As a big fan of musicals, it’s surprising that I have never seen this infamous film. I had preconceived notions about what it would be like and I thought that I wouldn’t enjoy it. However, the movie was nothing like that I thought it would be and I enjoyed the “behind the scenes” style of film that the director used to show the transition between silent films to talkie.…
