Unlike previous Disney animated movies such as Snow White and Cinderella, family is an important theme in the movies The Lion King and Mulan. Simba, the main character in The Lion King has a father, mother and uncle who are all appear onscreen and play a role in his life. Similarly the title character Mulan has a father, mother and grandmother who she is very close too. (Interestingly, both Mulan and Simba are only children.) By the end of both of their movies they have matured into heroic adults who make or would make their parents proud of them.

Simba’s mother Sarabi appears in a traditional mother’s role: she appears alongside her husband Mufasa at Simba’s presentation, bathes him with her tongue and gives him permission to go play with Nala under Zazu’s watch. Mulan’s mother, Fa Li is also a more traditional figure. She has a larger speaking role than Sarabi, but is mainly concerned with forming Mulan into a good marriage prospect at the beginning of the movie. She expects that her husband will die because of his injuries when he joins the army and worries about her daughter’s safety after Mulan runs away. Fa Li has a strangely emotionless reaction to Mulan’s return at the end of the movie and no interaction occurs between them because of her return. As the villain, Scar is skilled in manipulation and strategy which makes up for his weaker physical state and the uses hyenas as his minions, promising that they will never go hungry again. Scar’s main target for manipulation is Simba. This is because of his resentment of Simba which comes from the fact that he is neither king nor heir to the kingdom because of Simba’s birth. Scar uses manipulative language disguised as concern for Simba’s well-being to place Simba in dangerous situations, such as tempting Simba to visit the elephant graveyard with Nala. Later, he expertly arranges the death of Mufasa with Simba in full view of the event. After Mufasa’s death and Simba’s self-imposed banishment, he becomes the king and forces the pride into starvation abusing the land and food
