Silent Weekend Research Paper

On Saturday, July 23rd, I began my Silent Weekend Project. The project ended on Monday, July 25th, at 10:00 am. For the full experience, I remained silent for forty-eight hours straight. As it was the weekend I had to find ways to communicate with others and order meals when my family and I went out. Luckily, my mother is somewhat familiar with sign language. My father, however is not. Much of the communication between my father and I was conducted through vague hand gestures and finger spelling.

On the first day of my project, my father and I were awake long before my mother. I had shown my father a few of the signs I would be using the night before, which made it a bit easier for us to communicate. I could tell him that I needed the bathroom, that I was going to go take a shower, that I was hungry, etc. Holding a conversation with him was much harder. We soon resorted to using the whiteboard in the kitchen for discussions about shows or complex questions.

When my mother finally awoke, it was late afternoon. Not long after this we went out to eat at Waffle House. My family and I are regulars at several of the restaurants in town and Waffle House is no exception. I took a pad of paper with me so I could write down what I wanted and my mother was

At this point I was able to sign stories and joke around with my parents. I had to compromise at times when I didn’t know the sign for “bad” or “healthy”, so I signed “not good” for the majority of the time. There were many times when I did not know the sign I was looking for and wrote it down on my pad of paper. Communicating in general was much easier on the second day. As we walked through the store, I relied mainly on sign language. We passed the occasional fruit that I wished to try and I would point it out. I remember asking my father if he liked dried bananas and a small conversation following that about my

During our Second Language Acquisition lecture, Professor Becker mentioned that American Sign Language was completely different than the English language. Although this makes complete sense to me now, I had never thought about this fact before that class. She also mentioned the concern of the high rate of illiteracy in the deaf community. This sparked my interest with this article even more and broadened my interest in the deaf community.…

Bonjour, Hello, and Hola, these are three of the ways in which I can say “Hello”. As a fellow Mexican-American, selecting French as my foreign language was not viewed as the norm, but it seemed more challenging and most captivating to my eye. It was not just because my older sister told me that we would have crepe days once a month, the french language always interested me. My French teacher was a foreign exchange student in France in her years of high school. As she spoke of her experiences abroad and the food, religion, history, culture, and language of the country I became captivated with the idea of travelling.…

For this week’s topic, I chose to write about the double day system within the EU, with Estonia in mind. The concept of the double day captures the idea that women who work outside their homes must also perform the daily household's duties as well. In Estonia, approximately 28-30% of women have paying jobs and perform the normal household duties. Whereas, men work normal 40 hr /wk. jobs, but do not help out as much around the house.…

    • Communicating with adults – it’s important that we are sensitive to the need of other adults, particularly if they have communication difficulties. It is possible that we will adapt with them without realising that. We often change the way we react to others, depending on the way in which they react to us. For example, if we are speaking to parent or carer, we might make sure that we are facing them and giving eye contact. Often schools will send our or gather information in particular way, email or letters.…

Prior to the comprehensive works and visionary thinking of William Stokoe, the American Deaf community remained deprived of recognition as a culture and community that shared a complex and intricate language rich in structure and system. Shortly after Stokoe began his twenty-nine year exploration of Sign Language at Gallaudet University in 1955, the Deaf Community’s future as an acknowledged independent community became immeasurably brighter. Through almost three decades of research, observations, learning, and writing, English Professor William Stokoe Ph.D. brought validation to the Deaf Community through by publishing his findings, which not only earned him the title of “Father of American Sign Language” but also legitimized American Sign…

Discourse Analysis A discourse analysis is the term used for a number of approaches to analyze written, vocal, or sign language use. For this paper I decided to analyze a conversation that was between my sister, Sarah, and her boyfriend, Evan. I made this decision because I thought it would be interesting to hear how they would talk about things, work out problems, or just chat. They are recently new parents to my two month old niece, Mariah.…

The Deaf event that I attended was a silent dinner held at Starbucks coffee. Before I arrived to the silent dinner, I was not sure what to expect or how much of the conversation I would be able to keep up with. When I was at the silent dinner, I was greeted kindly by those around me, and had the chance to meet many other signers that were a mix of both fellow Liberty students, and other people from the local community. The silent dinner that I attended was different than every other dinner event that I have attended, from the introduction that we made to the conversations and small talk that we shared.…

The then sixteen year old got her .22 caliber semiautomatic rifle, and shot for 15 minutes at San Diego’s busy Cleveland Elementary School schoolyard just across the street. Principal Burton Wragg and custodian Michael Suchar were both shot to death, and nine others were wounded, including eight school children. After Spencer barricaded herself in her home for about seven hours, threatening to “come out shooting”, she surrendered to the police.…

One of my most vivid childhood memories was when I was ten years old and my parents did something that we still talk about this day. I can still remember the smell of breakfast as I woke up that morning knowing that it was going to be a long day because we were driving to, rather than just flying South Carolina, to watch my oldest brother graduate. My younger brother turned on the lights so that he could see around the room that we both shared causing me to wake up and not fall back to sleep. As I laid there in my bed smelling bacon and coffee from downstairs I remember thinking that it was way too early for anyone to be awake. It was 8 in the morning and now that I look back on it 8 in the morning is not that bad and I wish I could still wake…
