Silent Dead Monologue

Boisterous laughter seeps under the closed door. For a brief second, I consider turning around; instead, I inhale, hug my folder, tighten my grip on my water bottle, and count to three. It’s just a Speech Meet. As I wander into the classroom, a familiar scene paints itself before me. Zach sits atop a desk chatting with a pretty brunette girl. In the back, Emily slouches in her seat, picking at her black nail polish. As I pass by the front desks, Tom peers up and sends a polite smile my way. After returning the gesture, I settle into an empty seat and exhale. It’s just a Speech Meet. Next to me, Gabe stares intently at the ceiling as beads of sweat drip down his forehead. A small smile plays across my lips as I realize just how unique we all are.
“Hey, Alli!” A familiar voice interrupts my thoughts.
“Oh. Umm. Hi, Zach.”
“How are you today?” He questions.
The brunette girl sends a piercing glare my way.
“Uh..I’m good. How are you?” I reply, attempting to seem

From the moment they wake up on Saturday mornings to the end of the competition, the lips of these Speechers are continuously moving. On the bus. While they sleep. During breakfast. In the cafeteria. Down the hallway. In the bathroom. To the walls. In their desks. Even during other people’s speeches. Since a Memorizer has a limited amount of concentration, he rarely focuses on his appearance; his shirt is never completely buttoned or tucked. He also refrains from engaging in conversation, and if he, for some reason, becomes lured into one, he immediately loses his train of thought and starts the memorization process over again. In order to avoid such distractions, he focuses on the ceiling. To accompany a Memorizer’s constant worrying, heavy amounts of perspiration bead on his forehead. Although his appearance, social skills, and mind are a bit frazzled, The Memorizer seldom forgets his

I don't think I'll ever forget myself as I was just then; my legs sprawled up on the picnic table and back arched to try and conform to the rigid wooden chair that would never be comfortable. My eyes were shut, and my sigh was soft. My chest hurt, but not in a broken-hearted kind of way. It was actually physical, but I tried to ignore it. I felt like crying for no reason, but I didn't.…

"The directions after the ally were clearly not thought out, completely fake, as if he was supposed to die in the ally. The killer must've intended to give the victim a fake map and strike in the ally. The beginning of the map made perfect sense. This was thought out, for a long time." Grayson explained.…

Rivers of Rhetoric I can feel the eyes of my peers on my neck and my cheeks are burning bright red. The buzzing from the fluorescent lights fog my thoughts as I squirm in my seat, not used to being confined to a typical elementary school desk. I can’t stop getting chills, not because of the incoming blast of fog chilled north coast air, but because I’m nervous of what Ms. Morton will say. Her lips are pursed as she looks my scrawny sixth grade self up and down before she blithely asks, “what is a comma anyway?” I pause, look up, and say “I don’t know,” but here’s the thing: I didn 't need to yet.…

When I think about the old world, only in distant memories and muted daydreams, I mostly think about color. The urban world was dashed in eye-catching colors and neon lights. Nature was slightly more subdued; somewhat monochromatic, yet varied in understated tones of grey, brown, and green. Color is hard to come by, now, with the exception of flame and blood. Rampant fires and firestorms consumed forests and cities long ago, and everyday continue to demolish what was once taken for granted.…

With any luck, the prick would be walking through that door any minute and it would be all over. Her sister, her mom, no one would have to see it and better yet, no one would be the wiser. “I must observe also that the plague, as I suppose all distempers do, operated in a different manner on differing constitutions; some were immediately overwhelmed with it, and it came to violent fevers, vomitings, insufferable headaches, pains in the back, and so up to ravings and ragings with those pains; others with swellings and tumours in the neck or groin, or armpits, which till they could be broke put them into insufferable agonies and torment; while others, as I have observed, were silently infected, the fever preying upon their spirits insensibly, and they seeing little of it till they fell into swooning, and faintings, and death without pain.” (DeFoe, 1722, p.71) Orders published by the Lord Mayor were a set of rules to be set in place…
