Formalistic Approach
This short story centers on the life of Raphael who livesin th grassy and treeless llano. He couldn't bear the loneliness brought by the death of his wife, and chose to establish an incestuous relationship with his daughter. Loneliness is the primary theme of the story.
The story also contains symbols. The garden, that his wife tended, represents life. Before she died, Rafael's wife made a garden in the sad and isolated llano, and it made Rafael's life happy. But when she died, there was no one to tend the garden, and the llano returned to being that sad, crappy place where no one wants to live.
When Raphael told his daughter that "spring is the time for garden", the spring here
