Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, Signs, may touch on the subjects such as the sacrifice of Colleen, the loss of Graham’s faith, a father-son relationship between Graham and Morgan, and family. Graham Hess, who is a former pastor, was left as a single parent after an automobile accident. The tragedy left his wife, Colleen pinned to a tree to perish. This affected the father-son relationship between Graham and Morgan. After the tragedy he lost his faith in God and leaves the church. Graham’s younger brother, Merrill, moved in to help Graham take care of the farm and Graham’s children, Morgan and Bo.
Throughout the film, the audience is shown three flash backs that explain what happened to Colleen. Colleen may not be a main character, but her death made a huge impact on the family. The first flashback occurred during a conversation between Merrill and Graham. Graham explains there are two types of people, people who believe in miracles. And people who believe everything is just random luck. It is learned that Graham does not believe in God and denies his existence. When Colleen was hit by Ray Reddy, she was pinned to a tree, waiting for Graham. Colleen waits for Graham so she can tell him something. The camera then moves slowly upwards which shows the audience the family stood in the middle of a crop-circle. Strange activity builds up that hinted of the extraterrestrials’ presence, however it did not convince Graham of such belief. Although Graham had lost his faith, Morgan had not which caused a consistent struggle for both him and his father. During one scene, Bo’s old baby monitor picks up signals from aliens but the signal is not clear is not clear until the family connects.
