Signs Of Fate In Romeo And Juliet

The the tragedy Romeo and Juliet, written by William Shakespeare in 1595 is about 2 star crossed lovers. These 2 star crossed lovers are not meant to be together and their are many signs that fate doesn't want them together. Fate affects the play, the story, characters, and the outcome of the story. One of the first signs that they are not meant to be together is when Juliet's father moves up the wedding, so Juliet will marry Paris on Wednesday not Thursday. In act 4 Lord Capulet says “Send for the county. Go tell him of this I’ll have this knot knit up tomorrow morning” (4.2 24-25). Because the wedding was moved up the Friar must get the letters to Romeo faster. Juliet will take the poison that night and ‘die’ before she is married. The Friar must hurry and send the letters if not Romeo won't be there when she wakes up. Also if Romeo doesn't get the letters he could find out that she is ‘dead’. Juliet has many worries about taking the position that night. Well the Friar was running to get Juliet for when she wakes he kept tripping over graves in the cementary. In act 5 the Friar says “Saint Francis be my speed how oft tonight have my old feet stumble at graves!- Who’s there” (5.3 121-122). The Friar getting their atter meant that Romeo had time to kill himself. If the Friar had not fallen over the graves then he could have been there fast enough to stop Romeo from killing himself. Romeo would have been their when Juliet wakes up. The Friar’s plan would have worked out and Romeo and Juliet could run away to Mantua together.
