The last conversation with his wife pops into Graham’s mind because he is facing the possibility of losing yet another person he loves. The last two lines, which she tells Graham “to see” and tells Merrill to “swing away” are about to save the Hess family. When Graham comes to reality, he is able to “see” what he was not able to before and turns to Merrill and passes on the message from Colleen. Merrill understands immediately because he is standing next to his prized bat from his record of hitting a baseball 507 feet during his career as a player. Then, Merrill hits the alien as hard as he can because, just like hitting a baseball, “it felt wrong not to.” The alien stumbles and one of Bo’s many water glasses fall to burn its shoulder.
