There is a feeling of connection between the three of them by the way they are all looking at each other and the cross. Although I could find no documentation on this, I feel there is also a symbol of the trinity in the three flowers to Mary's left side. The flowers are very prevalent and are connected to the figures in the painting by having the same color that is in the Virgin's shirt. It is also speculated that the water in the background symbolizes the baptism of Christ by John the Baptist. The fact that Mary is barefoot in the painting indicates that she is walking on holy ground.…

Today, sex is a much talked about subject, and roughly half of high school students participate in the act. Today the value of ‘saving one’s self for marriage’ is dated and carried out by few, but in ‘The Chrysanthemums’ by John Steinbeck, this ideal is presented to an extreme. Steinbeck begins the story by painting a descriptive picture of the Salinas Valley and describes it as “a time of quiet and waiting”. The story then introduces us to two of the main characters, Elisa and her husband, whose first interaction can best be described as awkward and curt . When her husband leaves, a tinker drives up to Elisas’ estate.…

David Call’s The Crucifixion of Sign Language is particularly striking to me because of its integration of an eminent religious symbol with sign language to convey a thought-provoking message¬– sacrifice and tolerance. The overall tone of the piece is assembled upon suffering and sacrifices that the Deaf community had to endured during the period of sign language oppression. Needless to say, there are countless negative implications as a result of the Milan Conference in 1880, but I believe that a greater effort towards tolerance, coexistence, and understanding of the Deaf language and culture is one gradual positive impact. The crucifix is a Catholic symbol that embodies the sacred significance of suffering, death, and resurrection of Jesus…

In the beginnings of this semester’s readings I find that Shakespeare enjoys writing about love and romance. Shakespeare does not shy away from powerful metaphors and comparisons. We find a constant theme of love represented in many types of ways. The first metaphor I initially picked up on was his varietal use of flowers, and him relating those flowers back to the romance of the story and each one of them has a distinct aspect that is metaphorically different in meaning. He uses different types of flowers to describe different things, people, and actions.…
