In addition he had a wife and daughter on the outside. In hope of getting his GED, Tommy asked Andy to help him study. As soon as Tommy convinced Andy he was committed and he wasn’t going to waste his time, Andy aided Tommy in his reading and such. Eventually Tommy became confident and had great hope of receiving his GED. Although when Tommy began to write the test he became frustrated and acted out against Andy and threw his test into the trash. However Andy’s hope in Tommy became visible when he took the test out of the trash and sent it in for him; assuming he would indeed pass and receive his GED. Tommy did lose hope while taking the test, but even so, Andy’s hope in him remained and he knew how badly Tommy wanted this and how hard he had worked for it.
