In the novel, Fever 1793, authored by Laurie Halse Anderson we are introduced to a young girl named Matilda “Mattie” Cook. When we first meet Mattie she is being woken up by her mother and finds that a mosquito is buzzing around in her ear. Her mother is telling her to wake up and get to work because their servant girl, Polly, is running late. They soon come to find out that Polly has passed away from a disease called yellow fever. A fever crashes down like a wave in the city of Philadelphia spreading incredibly fast among the people living there. Yellow fever is a disease that is spread by a species of infected mosquitos. A mild case of this disease can cause fever, headache, nausea, and vomiting, However, serious cases can cause fatal heart, liver, and kidney conditions. If diagnosed with yellow fever your body will feel pain in the abdomen and muscles, chills, fatigue, fever, and lose of appetite. More symptoms include bleeding and yellowing of the skin and eyes.

Yellow fever completely changes Mattie’s body as it spreads drastically. She becomes very pale and thin from the all of the pain this disease has caused to her and her body.
