Signature Theatre was founded in 1989 by graphic designer and performer Eric Schaeffer and actor Donna Migliaccio in Arlington, Virginia. At the time, Schaeffer and Migliaccio felt that the theatre scene in the Washington, DC area was being controlled by large theatres only interested in performing traditional plays. In their eyes a theatre was needed to produce new works, specifically newer musicals. These adaptations are unique from those of other theatres in that they not only bring new life to a familiar shows, but also because of their choice to produce these large, typically grand musicals on a small, more intimate stage. This has been done with great success in the past years, with musicals such as Into the Woods, Hairspray, and Les Miserables.
