Signature Assignment 1: A Case Study Of Forgiveness

The case study I choose for my signature assignment is case study number four that addresses forgiveness. When I think about this topic, I think about it from several different perspectives. Not only are we taught to forgive those that trespass against us, as some recite in the Lord’s Prayer; but we must also learn how to forgive ourselves. Having forgiveness in our heart it can bring peace, comfort and favor from God. When we respond to confrontation we should always react the way Jesus would want us to respond. Favor from God brings about a peace in our hearts that will show throw ones character, integrity, and faith in God. On judgement day we will be judged by the way we used these attributes while on earth. This may be hard to …show more content…
I choose forgiveness because this is something I have had to work hard on throughout my own lifetime. Case study number four says, one of your parents/ family members/ friends has been caught cheating with another person. S/he asks for forgiveness and desires to work through the problem. How would Jesus respond? I believe Jesus would have responded by forgiven the person who committed adultery and he would have given them an opportunity to try to make things right, just like he gives us every day. I believe this to be true because, we learned on our Wonders and Mighty deeds worksheet that in the book of Matthew Jesus feed the poor and healed many who were known as sinner, Leper’s and the even demoniac after they came to him and repented or asked for mercy on their souls. Repenting our sins is the first step in trying to make things right with God and the one we may have hurt. Every day that we wake up is a new day to try to get things right. We are all a work in progress, trying to earn our entry into his kingdom. The sins that Jesus forgave people for back in his day in time, are no different from the sins we have today. People have been committing adultery as well as other sins, since the beginning of time, and this is why we have scriptures that teach us the righteous to live our lives as well as forgiving others. One scripture that address forgiveness is Matthew 5: 44-45 (New Revised Standard Version with the Apocrypha) which says, “44 But I say to you, Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you, 45 so that you may be children of your Father in heaven; for he makes his sun rise on the evil and on the good, and sends rain on the righteous and on the unrighteous.” When we go to Jesus and ask for forgiveness, he forgives us the same way we are expected to forgive others. There are multiple scriptures in the bible that we can apply to our lives today that gives us example of God forgiving all

In Judaism, their perspective on this concept is that one who has mistreated another must earnestly seek forgiveness from them, and they are expected to do so a number of times. The victim will be held accountable for the individual’s actions if they do not grant forgiveness, as it is their religious responsibility to do so, and thus, the person who has pursued their pardon will receive this from God instead. This concept of forgiveness is applied throughout the teachings of Judaism. However, if Christians endeavour to achieve forgiveness from God, and have exhibited this to others, the Lord will absolve these individuals from sin. Followers also request that God absolves the acts of unjust from those who committed a sin towards the individual.…

To Forgive or Not Forgive, That is the Question Throughout the New Testament of the Bible, Christians are constantly reminded of the importance of forgiveness. Mathew 6:15 states: “But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses” (KJV). In other words, a person cannot expect to be forgiven by God if that person does not forgive others. When it comes to forgiving those that I love, I do not have a difficult time forgiving them, and this is probably because I love them so much.…

In a 2006 study about group forgiveness, researchers Catherine Philpot and Matthew Hornsey, found that Australians did not yet forgive the Japanese and other groups of perpetrators, for killing or harming other Australians. Although they were reluctant to forgive, many Australians were more willing to concede when individuals apologized on behalf of themselves, or of the group they represented. They concluded that forgiveness is not granted unless there is motivation promoting condonation. To quote, “while official group apologies increase satisfaction with offending groups, forgiveness may not be aroused unless motivation exists for it to do so” (Philpot and Hornsey). One way to determine whether or not forgiveness is granted, is to determine if the criminals were welcomed…

Many people consider forgiveness as a virtue and something desirable. Nevertheless, people define it differently, probably depending on circumstances. As Jeffrie Murphy puts it, forgiveness is the forswearing of resentment- the resolute overcoming of the anger and hatred that are naturally directed toward a person who has done an unjustified and non-excused moral injury. According to this statement, forgiveness is directly related to moral obligation from individuals. It suggests that unjustified moral injury to a person may cause anger and hatred that can only be overcome through forgiveness.…

Christ, as fully God and human at once he forgives and teaches us to forgive infinite times. One of the many opportunities of forgiveness was right at the crucifixion scene where He claims: “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing" (New International Version, Luke 23.34). Even when the soldiers had already mistreated him in sick ways and even divided up his clothes by casting lots, Christ answers in forgiveness. Certainly Jesus felt bad for this and probably didn't want to forgive them, but at the…

People have to think about both sides of the story. They ask God to forgive them all the time and don’t think about how he could be feeling about having to forgive everyone. They just look at the fact that they can take a deep breath and often forget about the wrong they’ve done. It's the same with everyone else in the world. The person being forgiven doesn’t necessarily consider the point of view of the person deciding to forgive them.…

If you were a prisoner in a concentration camp and a dying soldier is asking for your forgiveness, what would you do? In this situation it is a huge moral dilemma, it reminds me of the “trolley dilemma” where you can divert the trolley onto a track with one person or keep it on the track with many people on it (see attached image). To forgive and be judged by your peers, or deny a dying man forgiveness for his crimes is a lot like trying to decide which track your trolley will take. I found my answer through the sunflower, and the responses of Primo Levi, The Dalai Lama, Martin E Marty.…

Moreover, when people forgive their offenders, it shows that justice has been served. Furthermore, when people do what is just, by forgiving their offenders, their view of the world will change. One of the reasons why forgiveness and justice go hand in hand is when an immoral person receives retributive justice, it causes people to repent on their wrongdoings thus making them a better person when they’re also forgiven by their victims. Take, for example, the older brother from “What We Plant We Will Eat”. At the beginning of the story, he was arrogant and kicked his younger brother out…

Forgiveness, as seen by most people, sounds simple and easy, but it has a deeper meaning. My favorite quote in this particular story is," '...forgiveness is a decision, not an emotion. '" (Quiñones p.87) I have always viewed forgiveness as a simple, "I 'm sorry", but after reading this story, I have undertaken a new meaning of forgiveness. My first reaction to reading the story was sorrow and anger.…
