In fact, Thaddeus’ father concealed the dead body of Morstan and the treasure that they supposed to share. After their father’s death, Thaddeus Sholto who thought that his twin brother Bartholomew knew where the treasure was hidden, decided to bring Mary, Holmes and Watson to his twin brother’s house to confirm and clarify his intent. Unfortunately, upon arrival, his brother was found dead in his room with the same mystery word “The sign of the four” in the room like their father. From that point, Mr. Holmes the theorist, demonstrated all facts to the fact detective Mr. Athelney Jones, showing him how Thaddeus could be a witness in the murder of his poisoned brother Bartholomew, leading to his arrest as a suspect. After all, Holmes concluded that there are two persons involved in the murder such as Jonathan Small and another accomplice. In fact, Major Sholto was in charge of the convict-guard, and he knew about the hidden treasure through Jonathan Small who drew the map for him. Apparently, the treasure belonged to the four convicts who could not escape with the treasure. Jonathan Small planned with Captain Morstan and Major Sholto to find the treasure reason why they traveled to India. For the fact that both Major Sholto and Captain Morstan did not come back from the trip, Jonathan Small also traveled there in order to gain access to a part of his right and revenge to their disappearance. Mr. Small added to the detective that he was not willing to share the treasure and did not care about the justice that the detective was talking about because he worked hard about it. As Jonathan confessed himself, he described his life as a soldier before he was struck by a crocodile in the river.
