“The psychoanalysis of neurotics has taught us to recognize the intimate connection between wetting the bed and the character trait of ambition,” this is a famous quote by Sigmund Freud. Psychoanalysis was founded by Sigmund Freud. Freud believed that people could be cured by making conscious their unconscious thoughts and inspirations, thus gaining insight. The purpose of the psychoanalysis therapy is to free repressed emotions and experiences. This is a method of treating mental illness and also assists in explaining human behavior. By analyzing this theory we will understand the history behind this theory, how psychoanalysis is used in treating mental illness, and evaluate the psychoanalytic approach.
Sigmund Freud wanted to be a research scientist. He originally attempted to explain the workings of the mind. Freud compared the human personality to an iceberg, the small part showing above the surface of the water represents the conscious experience and the larger mass below the level of the water represents the unconscious. Freud believed personality was based on three key elements the id, ego and superego. The id contains all of the unconscious, basic and primal urges. The ego is the part of the personality that must deal with reality. It helps us control the urges of the id and helps us behave in ways that are realistic and acceptable.
