Development is defined as the distinct changes which happen physically and mentally throughout the lifespan of a person. It is a continuous process. There are four major developmental theories which are put forward by Sigmund Freud, Erik Erikson, Jean Piaget, and Lawrence Kohlberg. Each of the above said developmental theories focuses on the emotion, behavior, physical changes and the mental development of a person. It is very important for everyone to know these developmental stage especially if you are a teacher.
In this assignment I will be briefly discussing the four major developmental theories and how each theory is applied in real life teaching.
PSYCHOSOCIAL THEORY (Erik Erikson)
The psychosocial theory was framed by Erik Erikson. He divided the development into five stages before 18 years of age and three stages after. Out of this these eight stages only three stages namely initiative Vs. Guilt (Age 3 to 6), Industry Vs. inferiority (age six to puberty) and Identity vs. Confusion (Adolescent) are related to learning and teaching.
Initiative Vs., guilt is the first stage of which is the preschool stage. Children should be allowed to learn through their own action.
