Sigmund Freud is known as one of the most well known thinkers in world history. Freud was born May 6, 1856 in Freiberg, Austria which is now known as the Czech Republic. Him and his family moved to Vienna shortly after his birth where he lived for most of his life. Freud entered the University of Vienne at the age of seventeen with full intent on studying law. After studying under well known scientists, he decided on medicine. Freud received his medical degree from University of Vienna in 1881. After graduation in 1882, Freud began his work at the hospital in Vienna. His first studies included cerebral anatomy and aphasia, which became the topics of his first medical publication On the Aphasias: a Critical Study. Over the next few years, Freud worked in many different parts of the hospital, including the local asylum. His work in the asylum began his interest in clinical work so in 1886 Freud quit his work at the hospital in order to begin his study on nervous disorders. Upon opening his first private practice in 1886, he began treating patients with hypnosis. Freud had adopted this method from colleague, Josef Breuer, who became well known for his clinical work with patient Anna O. Anna O, while in a hypnotic state, was able to talk about her psychological symptoms. Breuer found that by having Anna O. talk about her symptoms and experiences with those symptoms, they became reduced.
